TAPS – COVID 19 Update – March 16, 2020
At Tazewell Animal Protective Society (TAPS), the health of our employees, animals and our customers are our number one priority. We are committed to keeping our staff and community safe. At this time, that means we are limiting foot traffic and the potential exposure to COVID 19 as much as possible. The following restrictions will be put in place now through March 30th. If we can lift these restrictions earlier, we will certainly do so.
Adoptions by appointment
During this time of great uncertainty, we are still working to fulfill our mission to move our available animals into loving adoptive homes. We kindly ask that the public refrain from visiting the shelter unless you are seriously intend to adopt. If you plan to adopt, you can first view all of our available pets on our website and complete an adoption application online at www.tapsshelter.org. Once your application is approved, and if you are the first applicant on an available animal, our staff will contact you via telephone to schedule an appointment to conduct a meet and greet. We will strive to schedule appointments no later than 6:00 p.m.
Temporary Suspension of Paper Applications
Effective immediately, we will suspend the use of paper applications and accept online applications only to prevent the community use of pens and clip boards and minimize the handling of paper by our staff through March 30th. This situation continues to be fluid and if we believe we can lift these restrictions earlier, we will, and hopefully we will not have to continue this beyond the 30th of this month.
Community Service Hours Cancelled
We are also suspending all community service hours through March 30th.
Please Be Respectful of the Health and Well-being of our Staff
We ask respectfully asking that both our volunteers and scheduled adoption appointments please not enter the shelter if you are sick, even with mild cold or flu symptoms or suspected allergies, if you have had recent travel from countries where COVID-19 outbreaks have been reported, if you have had known contact with the case of COVID-19, or if you yourself are awaiting COVID-10 test results. If our staff believe that a visitor to the shelter appears to be sick, you will be asked to come back at a later date.
Temporarily Suspension of Donations of Soft Goods
We are temporarily suspending the acceptance of drop off donations of blankets and towels. We continue to be in need of donations to carry out our shelter work and ask that you consider sending donations directly from retailers such as Chewy or Amazon when possible. If you’d like to drop off donations of food, potty pads, cleaning supplies, etc, we ask that one representative from your group/family bring the donations to minimize foot traffic. You may bring donations to our back door.
Special Events Cancelled
Unfortunately, do to our economic climate, on-going closures and the recommendation of the CDC to limit gatherings for the next 8 weeks, we have made the difficult decision to postpone Wine and Dine. This is a significant loss for TAPS as it is our largest fundraiser of the year, bringing in almost $40,000 annually. We are also postponing Cupcake Wars at this time too. Our goal is to reschedule these events as we get past this difficult time. We ask, if possible, that if you are in a position to make a monetary donation that you do so either on-line, www.tapsshelter.org, our expenses continue despite what we expect to be a dramatic drop in donations.
Volunteer Orientations Cancelled
We are rescheduling all volunteer orientations through the end of the month.
Low Cost Spay/Neuter Sign Up
Our low cost spay/neuter surgery dates are already scheduled through mid-April. To minimize contact and the need for paperwork, and sharing of clipboards and pens, we are suspending low cost sign up through the end of the month. Those already scheduled for an appointment should plan on keeping your appointment as schedule.
Thank you for understanding our need to put emergency practices in place for the health and well-being of everyone involved at TAPS, especially our employees. This is a very sad time for the animals in our community and beyond as we anticipate a significant reduction in both donations and adoptions as our country attempts to navigate through this difficult time while minimizing the spread of illness.
Tazewell Animal Protective Society (TAPS) is a No-Kill animal shelter that gives dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens a home until permanent homes can be found. We are located in Pekin, Illinois, which is just outside of Peoria in the Central Illinois area. Please take a few minutes to look around and meet some of the terrific animals we have up for adoption. Please consider adopting your next companion from TAPS No-Kill Animal Shelter. We have dogs and cats of all sizes, breeds and colors. If you don't find a companion animal that is right for your family now, please check back often as we take in new animals almost daily.
PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING A PUPPY OR KITTEN LESS THAN 6 MONTHS OF AGE FROM TAPS NO-KILL ANIMAL SHELTER
With the onset of puppy and kitten season, at times, we have multiple puppies and kittens looking for a home. We receive hundreds of applications on our puppies and kittens. In an effort to move them into adoptive homes in a more efficient manner and streamline the application process, we will be approving puppy and kitten applications in the order received. Approved applicants will be called in to meet with any available puppies or kittens to determine if there is anyone available that might be a good fit for your family. We will no longer be accepting applications for specific puppies or kittens. Additionally, we will not hold a specific puppy or kitten for an applicant. If you submit an online application with a specific puppy or kitten listed, you will be placed on the general puppy or kitten list and your application will be processed in the order received. Effective immediately, applicants for puppies and kittens 6 months and younger must be 21 years of age.
The process to adopt our adult cats and dogs remain the same. You may apply for one of our wonderful adult animals by name and we will process those applications as received.
Please note that we receive multiple inquiries daily. Response time may take up to 72 hours. If you are interested in a dog or cat, please submit a no commitment application that is located above on our adoptions tab. Applications are processed in the order that they are received. Our puppies and kittens are extremely popular and receive a significant number of applications. We ask for your patience as we work through them. Thank you for considering TAPS No-Kill Animal Shelter as you welcome your next furry friend into your life.
